Haskell

Posted: Saturday, January 6th, 2007 @ 1:41 pm in Software | 3 Comments »

I have recently read up on Haskell, a programming language. It’s rather interesting, as Haskell uses a completely different approach than the likes of C++ or Java. You mainly define functions, and you can do that in very clever ways. My interest got started by Good Math, Bad Math, but now i found this tutorial […]

gNoSense

If you want people to use your Linux, you have to provide the measures that it will simply work on most people’s PCs. If an otherwise good organisation like the Free Software Foundation now recommends the Linux distribution gNewSense, which is Ubuntu with all non-free or open components removed, that accomplishes the exact opposite. It […]

Free Windows Explorer Alternative: xplorer² lite

Posted: Saturday, December 30th, 2006 @ 12:22 pm in Software | No Comments »

Some time ago I wrote about an alternative to Windows Explorer called XYplorer. Unfortunately, it is not free anymore. I do not use Windows much, so obviously I needed a free alternative. I found it in xplorer² lite, the light version of this software is free for private and academic use, exactly what I need. […]

Planeshift - What a game

Posted: Sunday, December 3rd, 2006 @ 3:03 pm in General, Software, Web | 3 Comments »

I just tried the game Planeshift, which is a free online game with really good graphics. In the first minutes of running around, I fell from a roof and ended up in some kind of Death Realm, where you apparently have to escape from. This is seemingly because the game developers think that this adds […]

If you want to resize images in kubuntu, you might want to install the KIM tools
sudo aptitude install konq-kim
Your konqueror will now have right-click context menus from kim under Actions. You can resize, transform pictures, save them in different formats, create albums and much more. Very easy, quick and useful! (You can, of course, mark […]

If you think about trying Ubuntu, you can find help at Ubuntu Forums. You can ask any question there, especially in the absolute beginner talk forum they ahev a policy of helping absolutely everyone in a friendly way.
I like that, you don’t find forums like that often.
I use Ubuntu now for almost all tasks, and […]

Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft) released

Posted: Friday, October 27th, 2006 @ 1:42 pm in Software | No Comments »

Yesterday, the new Ubuntu version 6.10, edgy Eft, was officially released. While the old one, Dapper Drake, is the eternally stable one with three years of support, this one is the one with all the new stuff, like Firefox 2. Look, Ubuntu is better and easier to use than Windows, maybe a bit different here […]

Text Gaim

Gaim, the best IM tool that combines all the major instant messaging programs into one convenient interface, has its new version of the 2.0.0Beta out (Beta4). In their blog, I found this funny item about the Text version of Gaim. I will try that one for sure! Why would anyone do that? Because it is […]

Hyperwords

Just the Firefox extension I was looking for: Hyperwords. Mark text in your Firefox, hit Enter and…search the marked text on Google. Or Amazon. Or blog it. Or translate it. Dozens of choices. Or double-enter for Google search. Lovely
/edit: This )/§% thing phones home! It has a button to deactivate “sending usage statistics”, […]

A double-click in firefox on the empty space on the tab bar opens a tab. Noticed only after I daringly installed Edgy Eft, which has Firefox 2 Beta, which doesn’t have my Tabs plugin yet. But has nicer tabs, so that’s fine. If your tab bar is full, you must use Ctrl+T.
