Saving humankind, not the planet
For the BlogActionDay on environment, I want to add this thought. It’s not my own thought, it rather is the answer of Oliver Morton to edge’s dangerous idea feature. When I read that piece for the first time, it struck me like lightning. The very idea is simple yet so true and important.
You should read the whole thing, but it boils down to this: We don’t need to protect our planet. The planet will take care of itself. Some degrees more or less won’t break Earth apart. Life will not disappear, some or a lot of species might disappear, but nature will prevail and evolution will crank its gears and develop adjusted life forms. No - the only thing that environmental protection will have to protect is us.
So - if you “think green”, don’t say you want to save the planet. Why can’t you say you want to save humankind?

Hi,
I found your blog through a comment you made at the No Impact Man site. I just wanted to tell you that it was a great comment. I think that the approach of saving humans has a much more universal appeal, than strictly saving the planet. The “save the planet” approach has been around for a long time and many people do not relate to the concept as well as they should. Putting it in terms of people, their health and their happiness is a great way to get their attention and hopefully their action.
