Songs You Should Know #7: Destiny’s End - The Obscure
Back to US Power Metal, and to the singer in half of the bands: James Rivera. He sang in Helstar, Distant Thunder, Destiny’s End, Seven Witches, Killing Machine and whatnot. Currently in Vicious Rumors, but the band I enjoy most of these is Destiny’s End, especially their first album, Breathe Deep the Dark.
It combines a mysterious, yet cutting and heavy sound with excellent vocals, great driving guitars and gripping refrains. This is a bunch of great musicians suceeding in doing something different with Power Metal that still contains all the trademarks of this kind of music. One of my favourite albums (and one of my first, I bought it together with the Black Symphony album, what a great blind buy!).
“The Obscure” is my favourite song. It changes between slow melodic parts and really pounding heavy parts. James Rivera sings like he wants to drive a windmill, and you can hear the guitarists collectively banging their heads! So will you!
