Review: Space Odyssey - Tears of the Sun

On the first two Space Odyssey albums, band leader and keyboard wizard Richard Andersson (no, not the MacGuyer guy) brewed a fantastic symphonic power metal mix in the vein of Yngwie Malmsteen in his good times. But since he has another band (besides the 12000 other bands he used to have or used to play in), called Time Requiem, he now decided to clear up the musical differences between the bands. Unfortunately, Space Odyssey got axed and had its progressive elements removed and was converted to pretty plain guitar (or keyboard) hero hard rock. The amazing singer of the first two albums was also replaced for time issues, but the new one is also ok.
What we get now is rather plain rock, sounding a bit like old Rainbow or Deep Purple CDs, or if you want more recent examples, the Russel Allen solo album or the Allen/Lande project. My problem with this album are the many slower tracks, especially as they clump in the second half of the album. They are mildly boring, this album would really have needed some more fast rockers!
If you can live with that, this is a good melodic hard rock album! 7/10 points
