Top 5 Albums of the Year 2006 (Iteration One)

So, end of year already, time for top albums. 2006 was somewhat anticlimatic regarding new releases. After some thinking, I came up with this version of my Top 5 albums. Beware, I called this first iteration, as I plan to do a Top10 actually. This means more thinking what albums came out this year and might change the top 5 a bit. But not much, so here we go:

5. Spock’s Beard - Spock’s Beard

I reviewed this album 10 days ago, read this one. Like so many albums by bands I love, this one lacks the last bit of enthusiasm and consequent writing to be better. Still, a highly enjoyable and beautiful album!

4. Trivium - The Crusade

Boy oh boy, what a gigantic leap this band made! From a strange metalcore melange with completely unbearable scream-vocals, they turned into Metallicas legitimate heirs! Pure Metal! Again, some filler tracks, but more real killers! So, sound the anthem and bang your head to this one!

3. Into Eternity - The Scattering of the Ashes

Despite my enthuiastic review, there were two better albums this year. This one also lacks some diversity in both playing (drums!) and writing. Has some (high-quality) fillers. Yes, I said this would be the album of the year. But I reconsidered as the album lost some fire in the long run!

2. Mastodon - Blood Mountain

This album didn’t lose, it gained in the long run. Their sound is so unique and full of ideas, that it just takes a lot of time to get used to. I now really dig this album, and if they had made it a bit heavier (like Leviathan), it would surely have taken the top spot. Here’s my review from October.

1. Billy Talent - Billy Talent II

Woo radio rock. But the equation was simple: There was no other album this year where nothing distrubed me, and the quality of the songs stays constantly high. I just love albums where you have a different favourite song each time you listen to it! A well-deserved top spot! You can find my review here!
