KATRIN moved
Yesterday, I told you of KATRINs arrival. Today, KATRIN was moved to its position in front of the hall into which a crane will lift it tomorrow. Of course, I didn’t bring my camera but the nahdy camera did quite well. So here are some more pictures. When we came back, the convoy was already moving, and we came back just in time to see the spectrometer pass right under our noses! In the morning, steel plates had been put on the sides of the road were grass patches were or where the transport needed to turn. First, we have the transport coming and passing under my window:

Then it had to take the corner. As the wheels can turn almost 90 degrees, the transporter can drive around corners like you wouldn’t expect from such a huge thing.
As it passed around the corner and reappeared on the other side, I followed it to the hall. You can already see the red/white crane that will lift it.

Then, in the next turn, it also had to be maneuvered around a street lamp.
Of course, there were lots of people watching and following, some had a good view from the top of their buildings:

The spectrometer was transported on a wagon with its own engines, lots of wheels. A controller used a remote to steer it, and several men watched for obstacles, so even narrow passings with just a few centimeters to spare were possible.
So now it’s on the hook of that giant crane.
