If you think about trying Ubuntu, you can find help at Ubuntu Forums. You can ask any question there, especially in the absolute beginner talk forum they ahev a policy of helping absolutely everyone in a friendly way.
I like that, you don’t find forums like that often.
I use Ubuntu now for almost all tasks, and I really like it. It’s so flexible and easy. The konqueror proves to be an amazing tool. If you are looking for a manpage, try #ls in the konqueror for the ls manpage (or ##ls for the info page), layouted for HTML. Much better than scrolling around in the shell window.
I also recently noticed the existence of klipper. In Linux, everything you mark is automatically copied to the clipboard, so no more Ctrl+C pressing. The middle mouse button works for pasting. You sometimes make an error and mark something you want to delete before you can paste. klipper helps here, keeping a history of your copied stuff! It’s the little clipbaord with a K in the bottom right corner.
Besides the graphics program gimp, there is now a program called krita for KDE. I have to try that one out sometime.
For entering and editing texts in strange tongues like Farsi, I discovered the editor yudit. Helps a lot, you can choose your language and look up which key does what.
How come your still not trying at least the live CD? No cost, no installation, only a burned CD. Reboot and try.
